Calculating GPAs
Students can locate their official GPA on their current high school transcript.
Numeric Grade Averages on a 100-point Scale (NGA)

NGAs are the official GPA used in Atlanta Public Schools

NGAs are calculated on a 100-point scale using the final numerical grades from all attempted high school credit bearing courses.

High school level courses taken in middle-school are included on the transcript, but are not be factored into the NGA
-
Unweighted NGAs do not include the 10 honors points which are subtracted before the calculation.

The weighted NGA is the average used to calculate class rank, including valedictorian and salutatorian
Grade Point Averages on a 4.0 Scale (GPA)*

Conversion of numeric grades to quality point scores includes high school credit courses taken in grades 9-12.

The quality point GPA score is calculated as a support to students as they apply to colleges and/or universities.

Class Rank

Class rank is calculated using the cumulative, weighted numerical grade point average.

Unofficial class rank will be released in the fall semester of senior year

Class rank determining valedictorian and salutatorian will be calculated after 1st semester grades of senior year are finalized and will be released in February of senior year

Class rank is not final or official until a student has completed all graduation requirements.
Online Classes & Credit Recovery
Online course work, for credit recovery and for initial credit, is offered at North Atlanta High School through the Atlanta Virtual Academy (AVA). AVA is free of charge to APS students is the only online course platform approved by APS.
Students may take online classes during the day as part of their NA schedule, beyond the day in addition to their NA schedule or take all courses online as a full-time AVA student. Students must apply for all online courses and be approved by assigned counselor. Parents are responsible for ensuring the student has regular access to a computer with internet.
Online class start and end dates are aligned with semester start and end dates on the APS academic calendar. Students can access their online course 24/7 and are required to complete all the assigned online class coursework by the end date with a passing grade.
Online Credit Recovery Classes:

AVA credit recovery classes are available for students who fail a core academic course required for graduation. Most graduation requirements are available on AVA Credit Recovery.

The grade the student earns in the credit recovery course will not replace the failing grade but will be added to the student’s transcript and calculated in the GPA along with all other attempted HS courses.

The NCAA WILL NOT accept Credit Recovery course credits for student athletes (will accept Initial Credit courses only)
Initial Credit Classes:

AVA Initial Credit classes are available for students need to take a class beyond the regular school day to make room in their schedule or to take a course that is not offered at North Atlanta.

Initial Credit classes are those where the student has not previously attempted to take the course.

Initial Credit courses in core academic subjects require NAHS administrator approval.

AVA Full Time Flex Program
AVA's Full Time Online program offers students an option to take a full 6 course schedule through an asynchronous self-paced learning model with teacher facilitation as needed.

The IB Programme at NAHS
North Atlanta is an International Baccalaureate World School.

All 9th and 10th graders are participants in the Middle Years Program (MYP).
-
Students make elect to pursue IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) or IB Career-Related Programme (IBCP) in their 11th grade year.

Baseline admission criteria for both include an 85 average in core classes in grades 9 and 10; minimum Lexile 1150; successful completion of the MYP Personal Project
Student in IBDP or IBCP are required to take a prescribed set of classes as well as complete various projects and beyond the regular school day activities.

Nearly all IB classes are taught as 2-year courses

IBDP course requirements: Students are required to take a total of 7 IB courses (1 Literature, 1 Math, 1 Science, 1 Social Studies, 1 World Language, 1 CTE/Fine Art or additional Science, and Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

IBCP course requirements: Students are required to take a minimum of 3 IB courses and selected pathway courses (2 or more IB courses, IB Personal/Professional Skills (PPS) and Pathway Program course)
